Artists Somayeh Fanaei, Alejandra Morales Garza & Seoul Kim recontextualize traditional motifs, imagery & conventions from their respective cultures & countries of origin, to explore themes of identity & perception while creating connection their communities & wider world.

Somayeh Fanaei renders in pastel, beautiful portraits & still lifes using the colours & patterns of traditional Persian carpets as a recurring theme.

Alejandra Morales Garza depicts colourful fruits & fabrics common in Mexico in vibrant & energetic acrylic & oil paintings.

Seoul Kim embraces the Koren folk art form of Minhwa, capturing florals in bright colours & elegant lines with ink & watercolour on rice paper.

Words & pictures are basic forms of communication. But we don't all write or read the same language. Images may have different context depending on your background. In Words + Pictures celebrate the unique ways in which we communicate visually & discover how art can transcend language. Work on display includes calligraphy in multiple languages, illustrations, mixed media works combining text and image, & even rare books.

Exhibiting Artists: Renée Alexander - North Vancouver English calligraphers/illustrator, Chin Cheng Kan - Richmond Chinese calligrapher, Marley Kong - Coquitlam interdisciplinary artist, Charles Mayrs - West Vancouver writer/painter/photographer, Sanaz Revasani - West Vancouver Persian calligrapher/painter.
