Artists Francine Drouin & Shelley Wales explore notions of secret knowledge, memory & the passage of time through beautiful floral themed artwork.

Francine Drouin, based in West Vancouver, creates painterly, ethereal lens based mixed media floral portraits that celebrate the vibrancy & the transience of life. With a deep appreciation for the natural world she captures petals at their peak of bloom. Drouin aims to strip away the chaos of her subject's surroundings by presenting each flower as a solitary soul against a carefully selected digital or painted background. Her most recent project involves submerging the subject in vessels of water & injecting flows of milk, ink or acrylic. Familiar elements are combined in unexpected ways giving the image a surrealistic feel.

Shelley Wales, based in Tsawwassen, shares her vibrant, gestural mixed media paintings of garden scenes. Wales spent a year visiting & making monthly drawings of local gardens. The work that emerged act as visual records of connection & the passage of time as the garden moved through its seasonal cycles of life & death. Her paintings play with the idea that landscape & our recollections of it are not one thing but are instead a collection of smaller fragments we piece together we close our eyes & remember. Some of the gardens are glimpses of a single candid moment. Others are quilted memories, more reflective of feelings & connections to place than the actual place itself.
