'Where Light Gathers'

'Moon Tide'

Mia Weinberg

'Deep'

Artists Jenifer Matthews, Devon Ronner & Mia Weinberg dig deep into their psychic & emotional cores to find expressions of joy & hope in tumultuous times through layered process based mixed media works.

Jenifer Matthews is a North Vancouver abstract artist. Her curious spirit is reflected in her approach to art making by always asking "why not?". Matthews' experimentation embraces the boundless possibilities in technique, texture, colour & form, while using an variety of media including acrylics, pastels, oil sticks, charcoal, inks, & collage. Working spontaneously, Patterns & shapes appear guiding her expand on what is emerging. For Matthews, it is an active meditation, allowing her to create pieces that celebrate the joy of being alive.

Devon Ronner is a Vancouver based visual artist, writer & poet. Painting allows her to explore an evolving vocabulary of colour, shape & texture. Beginning with a loose intention, Ronner lets the creative process take over as she adds & subtracts layers of paint, paper, fabric, & even botanicals. This collection is a response to living in challenging times, not turning away from the difficulties while still holding a light to the beauty of the natural world & the tenderness in everyday acts of human kindness. Ronner hopes to convey a sense of wonder and joy in the face of the darkness; that the paintings may evoke feelings of solace & gladness, as well as a bit of sober reflection in the viewer.

Mia Weinberg is a Vancouver artist whose career has spanned a variety of media & styles. Working intuitively with no plan, she starts every piece with thick layers of gesso which she then molds & transforms into unique textures & forms using her hands, paint brushes & tools. By applying paint, she uncovers shapes & images that resemble echoes of landscapes or figures or scenes. These liminal spaces between light & dark challenge the viewer to explore & discover the meaning for themselves. When there is darkness or the unknown in the images, it always is matched by a spirit of adventure, excitement, & possibility.
