Donate by a gift of securities: This is a wonderful way to support our programmes and increase your tax savings at the same time. The benefit of donating shares is that no capital gains are incurred. An official tax receipt will be issued for the full value of the securities. The procedure is simple: you can make either make an electronic transfer via your broker, or you can send the share certificates by registered mail to our broker. Contact us for further details.

Donate by bequest: You can help ensure the future of the West Vancouver Community Arts Council by a bequest in your will. A legacy gift will not only help you achieve your philanthropic goals, but can also help you make a much larger gift than would otherwise be possible, by lowering income and estate taxes. With a little planning, you can create a truly lasting legacy for generations to come.

The following information is provided as general information. Donors should consult with their own legal and financial advisors before taking any action, but one of the following three common methods of legacy giving might prove right for you:

• Bequests of cash or property
  

When updating your will, you can include a bequest to the Arts Council. This could be a specific piece of property, sum of money, or a specified portion of your estate. Upon death, WVCAC will issue a donation receipt which can reduce income tax otherwise payable by your estate.

Your legal advisor will draft the wording which is right for you, but here is an example of a simple bequest:

“I give West Vancouver Community Arts Council (Charity Registration #119295947RR0001) the sum of $________ (OR _____% of the residue of my estate, OR _________________description of a specific piece of property)."

There is a real upside to making a bequest of shares or other marketable securities to the Arts Council. Your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the securities (at the time they are received), and your estate will not be required to declare any resulting capital gains on income.

• Naming the Arts Council as one of your RRSP or RRIF beneficiaries​
  

You may also wish to name the Arts Council as a beneficiary (or one of the beneficiaries) of your registered retirement plans. Proceeds from RRSP/RRIF funds present the simplest way to make a planned gift to the Arts Council. By designating "West Vancouver Community Arts Council" as RRSP/RRIF beneficiary (or one of them), the asset will be passed to WVCAC outside the estate, meaning no probate fees will be applied, and no income tax will be deducted. [Compare: For a single or widowed person, designating "Estate" as your beneficiary will lead to the full value of the remaining RRSP or RRIF being included in the income reported on the “date of death" tax return. For many, this would mean that almost 50% of the value of the RRSP or RRIF will be paid to the government as income tax.]

You won’t need to involve a lawyer to set this up. Simply contact your registered fund holder to change the beneficiary currently named on your RRSP or RRIF. No fees will apply, and it won’t cost you anything to change your mind in the future, if your wishes change.
